Nicholas House, a well-established care home in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, has recently expanded its offerings by introducing a cutting-edge rehabilitation service specifically designed for older adults. This new service aims to bridge the gap in care for those who need rehabilitation to regain their physical fitness and return to independent living.
A Successful Launch Event
On August 8th, Nicholas House hosted a launch event to showcase its new rehabilitation services. Attendees included health professionals, physiotherapists, and representatives from Age Concern, all eager to learn more about the facility’s innovative approach to senior care. The event began with a drinks reception, providing an opportunity for guests to network and enjoy the serene environment. This was followed by guided tours of Nicholas House, where attendees could see the newly fitted gym that plays a crucial role in the rehab services.
The highlight of the event was a demonstration of the physiotherapy services, which utilise state-of-the-art equipment and bespoke care plans tailored to individual needs. The event concluded with a presentation that outlined the benefits of the new respite and rehabilitation services, emphasising Nicholas House’s holistic approach to care.
Transforming Senior Care at Nicholas House
Nicholas House has long been known for providing compassionate, personalised care to its residents. The addition of the rehabilitation services marks a significant enhancement in its offerings, focusing on specialised, person-centred physiotherapy sessions aimed at improving daily living skills and promoting independence.
The rehabilitation programme includes a minimum of twice-weekly in-house physiotherapy sessions, with additional sessions available based on individual needs. These services are provided by The Caring Physio Company, utilising the on-site gym equipped with advanced tools such as parallel bars, Moto Med exercise bikes, and specialised wheelchairs. This equipment is tailored to help residents regain mobility and strength, particularly those recovering from hip fractures, knee or hip replacements, falls, and neurological conditions like strokes or post-op delirium.
Addressing a Critical Need
The decision to introduce rehabilitation services at Nicholas House stems from a recognised need for more intensive, specialised care for older adults. Many individuals, after hospital stays, find themselves physically deconditioned and unable to safely return home without further support. The new services at Nicholas House are designed to fill this gap, providing a safe and supportive environment for older adults to regain their strength and independence.
Rehabilitation residents at Nicholas House are temporary, with stays typically lasting two to six weeks. During their stay, a bespoke Rehab and Physio Plan is developed in collaboration with healthcare teams, ensuring that each individual’s unique needs are met. This approach not only aids in the physical recovery of residents but also helps reduce the burden on hospitals and NHS outpatient services by providing an in-patient solution.
A Commitment to Empowering Older Adults
Michele Valimaa, General Manager of Nicholas House, emphasised the home’s commitment to the well-being of its residents: “At the heart of Nicholas House’s philosophy is the belief inspired by Sir Nicholas Winton that everyone, regardless of age, deserves to live an independent life. Our new rehabilitation services are designed to restore functional skills and promote independence, ensuring a smooth transition back home with a reduced need for ongoing care.”
This new initiative at Nicholas House reflects a broader commitment to supporting older adults in living independent and fulfilling lives. The facility continues to operate its traditional residential services while offering these innovative rehab options, providing a comprehensive range of care that adapts to the changing needs of its residents.
